The skill matrix maps every technician against every relevant skill at a proficiency level. It is the backbone of safe, smart assignment.
Define Skills First
- Skill catalog — the canonical list of skills your operation cares about.
- Levels — a 0-4 scale: none, basic, intermediate, advanced, expert.
- Categories — group skills (mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, safety) for filtering.
Build the Matrix
- Create or import your skill catalog.
- For each technician, set a level per skill.
- Review the matrix as a grid: people down, skills across.
Tips
Use four levels, not ten. Granular scales look precise but nobody agrees on the difference between a 6 and a 7.
