OEE, MTTR, and MTBF as Decision Drivers

Use OEE, MTBF, and MTTR by asset to drive maintenance decisions and expose bad actors.

OEE, MTTR, and MTBF as Decision Drivers

Metrics only matter if they change a decision. Track the few that drive maintenance choices.

OEE

OEE = Availability x Performance x Quality. It tells you how much good product an asset actually makes versus its theoretical maximum.

  • Availability — uptime minus planned and unplanned downtime.
  • Performance — speed losses, minor stops, idling.
  • Quality — scrap and rework.

Maintenance Metrics

  • MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) — rising means reliability is improving.
  • MTTR (Mean Time To Repair) — falling means your wrench time and spares strategy are working.
  • Bad-actor count — assets consuming a disproportionate share of downtime and wrench hours.

Tips

Report MTBF and MTTR by asset, not as plant averages. Plant averages hide the one or two bad actors driving most of your pain.
