Tracking Energy Per Asset

Meter energy by asset, find the hogs, and set baselines.

Tracking Energy Per Asset

You cannot reduce what you cannot see. Tracking energy at the asset level turns a single utility bill into an actionable picture of where consumption — and waste — actually lives.

Metering Energy by Asset

  1. Identify the assets that account for the bulk of consumption (usually a small list)
  2. Add a meter reading or sensor feed to each in OpexMX
  3. Record consumption on a regular cadence — manual or automated
  4. Tag each reading with the asset, unit, and timestamp

Spotting Energy Hogs

  • Rank assets by consumption, not by name
  • Compare similar assets — one running 2x its peers is a candidate for service
  • Watch for creeping baselines — a slow rise often signals degradation

Baselining

Establish a normal consumption figure per asset under normal load, then alert when readings drift. The baseline is what makes "high" meaningful.

Tips

Start with the few assets that account for most of the bill. Pareto holds: a handful of machines dominate energy use.
